Meet the Classmates Living in Your Backyard

When the first school bell rings, most people see it as the end of summer. But while kids are heading back to the classroom, pests aren’t hitting the road just yet. Even in August, they’re still doing what they do best: hanging around your home and yard.

But what if bugs had to go back to school, too? 

Welcome to Bug High, where we’re using common pests’ real-life behaviors to determine what kind of student they would be. From the loudest kids in the band room to the ones always causing trouble, let’s find out which school personas these pests would take on.

The Athletes

Meet the star athlete on Bug High’s track-and-field team. With powerful back legs that can launch them impressive distances, grasshoppers are practically built for D1 scholarships. 

Their combination of speed and jumping skills helps them escape predators, and they can even jump up to 20 times their body length. With a long jump like that, it’s easy to imagine a grasshopper as the kid who's always wearing their varsity jacket, even on picture day. 

The Band Kids

Loud and impossible to ignore, cicadas are the perfect candidates for Bug High’s marching band. And like any good marching band, they don't exactly believe in inside voices.

Male cicadas make their signature sound by vibrating structures called tymbals on their abdomens to attract mates. The buzzing and clicking sounds they make become the soundtrack of late summer, and naturally, the fight song for Bug High.

Stick your head out the window, and you can probably hear these loud bugs warming up for practice.

The Theatre Kids

Talk about dramatic. With their stiff poses and signature praying stance, praying mantises always look like they’re waiting to make a big entrance.

And when the curtain goes up, they know how to put on a show. Mantises use their front legs to quickly grab and hold their prey, turning an ordinary meal into a full-blown production.

As long as the matinee showing is after lunch period, these bugs would make a great scene partner. 

The Bullies

Wasps are that one student you don’t want to run into in the hallway. They’re territorial, defensive, and unlike bees, can sting multiple times. 

And you know the old trope about bullies taking your lunch? Wasps practically invented it. Sugary drinks, meat, and other food can attract them, making the cafeteria their favorite place to hang out. 

If a wasp is sitting in your assigned seat in the lunchroom or the classroom, it’s better for you to leave them alone. We don’t need a detention-worthy incident on the agenda. 

The Mathletes

Ants are the students everyone wants on their group project. They’re organized, hardworking, and always seem to know exactly what should happen next.

In fact, ants are known for having planning and communication down to a science. They’d show up to the first group meeting with a plan, assign everyone a task, and have the project halfway finished before anyone else opened the assignment.

And if you try to tell them you’ll get your part done later? Good luck. They’ve already finished it.

The Kids Who Never Leave Campus

There’s always that one kid who somehow manages to show up before the doors open and still hasn’t left when the janitor’s the last one in the building. Cockroaches are that kid. 

These resilient pests are experts at finding dark, sheltered places to hang out. So even if you shut down the school, turn off all the lights, and send everyone home, cockroaches will find a way to stay put. 

Maybe they missed the bus. Maybe they just really love extracurriculars. Either way, they’re not going anywhere.
