What Do Weevils Eat?
As herbivores, weevils feed on various plant parts, with most species having preferred plants. Weevils found in gardens eat a variety of fruits and roots, whereas the ones that make their way into homes feed on seed or grain. Weevils found indoors usually reside in pantries eating dry food like flour, rice, pasta, and cereal.
Where Do Weevils Come From?
Weevils live in almost all environments and are attracted to moisture, finding ways into homes when the weather's hot and dry. Infestations usually begin outside in fruit trees and gardens, with the pest entering the home through cracks and openings along doors, windows, or the foundation.
How Long Do Weevils Live?
Most species of weevils live between two to three months, depending on environmental conditions. Rice weevils are one of the most destructive to food supplies, as they have the longest lifespan at around five months. Weevils will lay between 50-200 eggs in their short lifespan.
How to Get Rid of Weevils
Vacuum up any weevils you see on the walls or shelves of your pantry, then clear the pantry and wipe down with white vinegar and disinfectant. You can freeze any salvageable food for at least five days to kill larvae.
To prevent a weevil infestation, seal any gaps where insects could enter your home, store food in sealed containers, and place cloves and bay leaves in and around dry goods. Inspect food before purchasing at the store to ensure there are no openings in the packaging.
