Flying Termites or Ants?

Kimberly Beaudin

Termite swarms are out in full force again, thanks to the hot weather and occasional rainstorms.  These pests love these types of weather. The termite swarm season usually begins in March and can last until mid-late summer. It’s not unusual that termites are more noticeable when they swarm together to form new colonies, especially if they choose to invade your home.

It is very common for people to mistake termites for the less harmful, common winged flying ant species. Because spotting their differences can be difficult, make sure that you take the necessary steps to prevent an infestation just in case they are indeed, termites.

What’s the Difference between a Flying Ant and a Flying Termite?

  • Termites have two pairs of same-sized wings, and ants – such as the carpenter or fire ant – have slightly larger wings up front and smaller wings behind.
  • Ant antennae have a bend and termite antennae are straight.
  • Termites also have a broad waist, while a flying ant’s waist is narrow.

Termite Infestation Warning Signs:

  • Mud tunneling in, over, and under wood.
  • Wooden structures blistering or darkening.
  • Damaged wood becomes very thin.
  • Discarded wings around windowsills, because the termites will try to escape by flying towards the light.

How You Should Handle a Termite Infestation:

  1. Try to find where the infestation is coming from
  2. Check your entire house for signs of a pest infestation
  3. Finally, contact a pest professional immediately

Don’t risk mistaking one for another and possibly dealing with significant damages to your home’s foundation. Contact a pest professional to create an action plan and protect your home from these costly termites!
